Introduction of scandium element:



 



Scandium is a soft, silver-white transition metal, located in the third sub-group of the fourth cycle of the periodic table, which belongs to the rare earth family with yttrium and lanthanide elements, but has its metallogenic particularity and is often not mineralized with other rare earth elements. However, scandium usually combined with titanium, vanadium and iron, but the yield is very small, the content in earth's crust is about 0.0005%. Scandium is highly dispersed in more than 800 kinds of minerals, but there are only a few minerals with scandium content more than 0.05%, such as yttrium ore (Sc2O3 content 33.8%- 42.3%) and beryllium silicalite (Sc2O3 content 14.6%). China is one of the countries rich in scandium resources in the world. China mainly recover scandium from titanium dioxide waste liquid, bauxite and ion adsorption rare earth ores. In North America and Russia, some uranium deposits are also important sources of scandium extraction.



 





Properties of metallic scandium:



 



Pure scandium metal is easy to combine with oxygen, carbon dioxide and water when directly exposed to air, so it should be sealed with argon gas. Scandium oxide, which is white and insoluble in water, is more common to be seen in the market. Scandium has many superior physical properties, such as higher melting point (1541 ℃) than iron, nickel, rare earth lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium and neodymium, etc., second only to the high boiling points of rhenium (5627 ℃), molybdenum (5560 ℃) and cobalt (2870 ℃). At the same time, scandium, as the lightest member of the rare earth family, has the characteristics of low density, good ductility, excellent catalytic performance and so on.



 





Preparation method of scandium metal:



 



Scandium metal is produced by calcium thermal reduction. The reaction equation is as follows:



2ScF3 + 3Ca → 2Sc + 3CaF2



 





Uses of scandium metal:



 



Scandium metal with its compounds and alloys are widely used in metallurgy and chemical industry, aerospace, warship, superconductivity, laser, nuclear energy, electronics and other fields. Scandium is the "king of aluminum alloy", which has a strong grain refinement effect on aluminum alloy, which can significantly improve its thermal stability, mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. Scandium oxide can be used to make high efficiency lasers, special ceramics and so on. Scandium alloy material is the main aerospace material and the structural material of high-speed aircraft. Scandium alloy products are also widely used in fuel cells, cathode materials, scandium sodium halide lamps and catalysts.



 



In semiconductor industry, scandium can be used as a variety of semiconductor devices, scandium is usually used as a dopant to change the electrical properties of semiconductor materials. Scandium-doped aluminum nitride thin film, namely aluminum scandium nitrogen (AlScN) material, is the core material of 5G high frequency BAW filter.



 



Hunan Rare Earth Metal Materials Research Institute Co.,Ltd (HNRE) began to study the industrial preparation technology of high-purity metallic scandium since the 1980s, with a purity of more than 99.999%, which is in the leading international level and enjoys the reputation of "king of scandium in the world". The "Development of High Purity Scandium" project of our institute won the third prize of National Scientific and Technological Progress, and presided over the drafting of the China national standard of scandium metal "GB/T 16476-2018".
